FINOLA'S PEDAL FOR SCOTLAND TEAM are supporting her to help her go to a specialised college in England later this year & to raise the profile of the current unequitable provision for complex needs young students in Scotland.
Sadly there are NO specialised colleges in Scotland at all but 56 in England.
The family need to raise £75,000 per ANNUM (incl of travel expenses) for a 3 year Living & Skills course that will enable TRUE INDEPENDENCE.
She has a place offered to her at Portland College, Nr Nottingham starting on 5 September 2009 but dependant on funding availability. She is having to go to Nottingham as sadly there are no specialised residential colleges in Scotland for further education.
If we lived in England & Wales funding would be met in full by the Living & Skills council (Education) / Social Work & Health
Having queried with the Cabinet Secretary for Education & Lifelong Learning the damning report from last years Mapping Study (which was commissioned by Scottish Government and carried out by BRITE to identify Current Provision Across Scotland for Further Education for Complex Needs)
(FULL pdf report click here)
we received a reply from Scottish Government 2.4.09
"At this point in time we do not think that there is evidence or sufficient support for one specialist residential college in Scotland. We will continue to discuss with SFC and the sector, how improvements to specialised provision, including the possibility of regional hubs, can be made."

The Public Petitions Committee have a live petition on this very subject of funding appropriate provision
Date Lodged: 19 August 2008
Latest update - 19 May 2009 : The Committee agreed to write to the Scottish Government seeking a further response to specific points.
Please help us to raise awareness regarding this unequitable provision of appropriate further education for complex needs in Scotland. Our 'special children' only want to have appropriate care, be educated, learn how to be independant and have a future..
Is that not the same as every child who wants to leave home?
